New York’s Junior Driver program requires teens with a Class DJ, MJ, or DJ/MJ learner permit to complete 50 hours of supervised driving, with 15 hours after sunset — one of the higher night-hour requirements in the country.

Who can supervise in New York?

Your supervising driver must hold a valid New York State driver’s license and be at least 21 years old. They must sit in the front seat while you drive.

Why 15 night hours matters

Most states require 10 night hours — New York requires 15. That extra 5 hours of after-sunset driving means you need to be more deliberate about scheduling night practice. Waiting until the last few weeks before your road test to knock out 15 hours at night is stressful and risky.

Tracking after-sunset hours automatically

New York defines nighttime as after sunset, which changes every day throughout the year. Student Driver Hours uses your device’s GPS and real local sunset times to automatically classify every drive — no guessing, no manual entry.

Tips for New York teen drivers

  • Build night hours steadily from the start — 15 hours is harder than it sounds
  • Student Driver Hours exports a log with date, time, and day/night breakdown — the format NY DMV accepts with form MV-262 certification
  • Permit must be held for a minimum of 6 months before you can take the road test
