Pennsylvania has one of the highest supervised hour requirements in the country. Before a teen can get a Junior Driver’s License, they must:

  • Complete 65 hours of supervised driving
  • Include 10 hours of night driving
  • Include 5 hours driving in poor weather conditions (rain, snow, fog)

Who can supervise in Pennsylvania?

A licensed driver who is 21 years or older must be seated next to the permit holder at all times. For teens under 18, PennDOT requires a parent or guardian to certify the hours were completed.

Driving restrictions during the permit phase

Permit holders in Pennsylvania may not drive between 11 PM and 5 AM, except for employment or volunteer activities (with documentation).

Tracking 65 hours across three conditions

Logging 65 hours of driving — broken into day, night, and poor weather — is a lot to track manually. Student Driver Hours automatically logs every drive with GPS, separates day and night using real local sunset data, and lets you add notes to any drive so you can flag poor-weather sessions.

Tips for Pennsylvania teen drivers

  • 65 hours is a significant commitment — start early and drive consistently
  • Don’t leave night or bad-weather hours to the end — they take time to accumulate safely
  • Your exported Student Driver Hours PDF gives parents a clear record to certify when applying for the Junior License
